Through out-of-the-box miniaturization, ROHM has developed the world's smallest * "03015 Size" chip resistor

Semiconductor manufacturer ROHM CO., LTD. has now developed the world's smallest * . chip resistor of 03015 (0.3mm×0.15mm) size that allows high-density packaging for mobile devices, including smartphones. ROHM succeeded in downsizing by 44% compared to the conventional 0402 (0.4mm×0.2mm) that had been said to be the limit of miniaturization.

In recent years, on the smartphone market that has been increasingly growing in demand, needs for ultra-compact components that allow for high-density packaging are arising with an increase in the number of components to mount due to enhanced functionality requirements. However, since the existing manufacturing technologies involve various problems such as a large tolerance of package dimensions (±20µm) and chip-off of chips in the cutting process, the development of packages smaller than 0402 has long been considered difficult.

This time, ROHM developed a manufacturing system not with conventional resistor manufacturing technologies, but with its unique miniaturization technology and also reviewed the dicing method, thus achieving substantial improvement in the tolerance of package dimensions in the cutting process to ±5µm. The improvement of the dimensional accuracy contributes to a reduction of stiction errors in the packaging process and furthermore using gold superior in corrosion resistance for the surface of electrode enhances solderability, enabling stable packaging. This makes a great contribution to the provision of advanced functionality and miniaturization of a wide variety of mobile devices, including smartphones that are said to normally have several hundreds of resistors per unit.

ROHM developed the world's first ohmic chip resistors in 1976 and, since then, has continued challenges to out-of-the-box new technologies. To constantly lead the world in the field of resistors that are the Company's pioneer product, ROHM will expand the lineup of high-quality resistor products and work on the development of chip resistors of 0201 (0.2mm×0.1mm) size.
